Singing to Bring Joy

I've sung throughout my life.
On winding trails while hiking with a group, letting my voice echo off trees and canyons. In remote villages of Zambia, greeting strangers with songs instead of words as I walked from one place to the next.
At training sessions, biotech startup town halls, even impromptu gatherings where a little unexpected music could crack the tension and make a room smile.
At that biotech town hall, I was presenting my take on the company values—and I wanted to show what courage really looked like. So I did something completely unexpected: I sang.
Just one line, but for that company, the question couldn’t have been more fitting: "Are we human, or are we dancer?"
The response was overwhelming. The chat lit up with joy and surprise. People reached out to me afterward—some laughing, some cheering, some just saying thank you.
It was exhilarating.
Joyful.
And sooo much fun.
Maybe in another lifetime, I could have been a diva—belting my heart out to packed stadiums like the incomparable #taylorswift.
But in this life?
I sing for smaller crowds.
To surprise them.
To draw a laugh out of them.
To remind people it's okay to drop their guard for a moment.
Because the best singing doesn’t happen when you’re trying to impress anyone.
It happens when you stop trying all together.
When you let the song move through you—not controlled, not polished, just bursting out of your chest in a pure release of joy.
Those are the moments I live for.
When a simple note—shared honestly—can stitch a little connection between you and the world around you.
No spotlight.
No stage.
Just you, the song, and whoever happens to be there to share it.
And if you're wondering how that kind of bold, spontaneous joy fits into the bigger picture? It’s all part of the story: Step 3: Be Bold, Courageous, and Quirky
